If there’s one thing you can’t automate in your dance studio, it’s genuine human connection. In Episode 12 of Studio Savvy, hosts Meagan and Colleen dive into how the little “extras” of caring and personalization help build loyalty at your dance studio.
Why Building Loyalty and Connection Matters
- It’s always easier to retain customers than attract new ones: Marketing and recruiting new students is always important but what keeps your studio thriving is keeping families connected and rooted. When people feel known and valued, they’re more likely to stay, recommend, and invest deeper.
- Bridging the emotional gap: Families aren’t just just enrolling in a class, they’re investing in places where they feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger. Especially when those classes are for their kids. That emotional bond builds communty at your studio.
- Small gestures compound: It’s not about grand sweeping gestures every time. Instead, consistent small acts (a note, a check-in, a birthday greeting) build a culture of care over time. You don’t have to have a large budget to wine and dine your customers. Simply being kind and empathetic goes a long way and costs nothing!
6 Practical Strategies from the Episode
- Remember and use names often: Make a point to greet students and parents by name (especially newcomers). It shows you’re paying attention and are excited they are there.
- Welcome new families warmly: When someone first enrolls, don’t just send a generic confirmation. Include a personal note, a short video, or a welcome packet with tips, expectations, and what to bring. The first 30–100 days are critical for establishing trust and clarity.
- Check-ins and touchpoints: Don’t wait until problems arise. Proactively reach out. Check in with a student who’s been ill for an extended amount of time, send a feedback survey annually, send a note of recognition for important milestones. These small touch points reinforce that you’re paying attention and that each person matters.
- Surprise and delight your families occasionally: Get with your team to brainstorm a few ideas that feel genuine to your values. Maybe a fun birthday ritual, annual awards at recital, or coffee, water, and treats in the lobby a few times a year. These are memories that linger and strengthen loyalty.
- Get your team on board: The connection shouldn’t only come from you. Your teachers and staff also need to be cultivating relationships with families. Train or remind them to notice, to ask genuine questions, and follow up. When your whole team leans into warmth, families feel it everywhere.
- Celebrate community over competition: Center your studio’s identity on supporting one another, not just performing. Host parent nights, observation classes, shared social events. Reinforce that your studio is a shared experience and community, not just a transaction.
What ties everything together is this: connections drive loyalty, engagement, and community. When your students, families, and even teachers feel seen, known, and cared for you move beyond running a studio and toward building a community. The strategies above aren’t optional extras, they’re the core of what turns fleeting interest into long-term commitment.
