For many dance studio owners, this is a familiar scenario: you’ve been growing, things looked strong, and then suddenly, your numbers level off. Enrollment stalls, momentum wanes, and it feels like you’re doing everything right but nothing is changing. This episode of Studio Savvy explores why plateaus are normal and widespread in the dance studio world and how to break free. Get our best tips to pushing through and getting more enrollment at your studio.
First things first, instead of beating yourself up, we suggest embracing the plateau as a signal. It’s time to shift strategy, not simply keep doing the same things and expecting different results.
Why Plateaus Happen
- The market changes. We all remember well what COVID did to our businesses. Since then, nothing has been the same. What worked pre-covid probably won’t work today. Make sure your programs are aligned with what parents desire right now.
- Life. As a business owner, we all face periods of time when we need to take a step back. Kids, illness, moving, vacations, life transitions, and more are all great reasons to let the growth of your business take a back seat. Simply recognizing that you are in one of these seasons can be a relief. It takes the guilt out of NOT growing. It’s OK to shift your focus. Know that when you are ready to grow, you can use this podcast to get things moving again.
- Your role as a dance studio owner needs to shift. The leadership skills of a 100 student studio are not the same as 500 student studio. Maybe you are on the crux of needing to shift what you do day to day.
The Escape Plan: Three Powerful Levers
The heart of the episode is a three-lever escape plan you can pull to break out of the plateau and increase enollment at your dance studio.
1. Re-energize your marketing plan: Whatever you current marketing plan is, it’s time to level up. That could mean sending more sales emails, getting an ad going, or establishing community partners. Lean into what is working and be leary of any marketing trends that don’t result in more students.
2. Expand your programs or revenue streams: What else can you try to get more students in the door? Shorter sessions, day-time classes, afterschool programs, a satalite location, etc. are all great ideas to try at your studio. You can also try selling merch, setting up an online dancewear store, or work to get a few rentals into the studio.
3. Shift your role as a dance studio owner. Take some time to reflect on how your job needs to evolve as your studio grows. Identify what sort of tasks move you closer to your goal and make sure you are working those into your weekly to-do’s. It may be time to hire someone to take on more at your studio so you can focus on growing.
Why This Matters
For dance studio owners who feel stuck, this episode offers a reminder. Growth isn’t linear and plateaus are not failure. They’re an invitation to level up. Rather than waiting for conditions to change, you change your approach. By up-leveling your marketing, expanding your programs, and shifting your role you will break free of that plateau and see more enrollment at your dance studio.
